Ssambap is a simple and traditional Korean dish in which rice is rolled up and eaten with a delicious sauce in various salads and plant leaves. The dish is very easy to prepare and easy to eat.

The dish is served with fresh salad leaves, pickled vegetables and optionally dried seaweed. Ssambap can also be eaten with various other side dishes. The sauce is also variable and you can try your own sauce. The ingredients you see in the ingredients list also refer to my sauce recipe. I will add more sauces here after some time and after further experiments. The best way to enjoy this dish is to roll up one salad leaf with some rice and a teaspoon of the sauce and eat this little wrap. As a further side dish I recommend kimchi, pickled wild garlic or perilla leaves and some seaweed. As fresh lettuce leaves I recommend lettuce, Roman lettuce (also to be found as Romana hearts) and the very tasty Lollo lettuce.

  1. Cook the rice first. If you still have some rice left, use it.

  2. Clean the lettuce leaves and put them aside to dry.

  3. Now prepare the sauce. Cut the onion into very small cubes and chop the garlic. Fry the onion with some oil, the chopped garlic and the minced meat.

  4. Now add Doenjang and Gochujang and simmer the sauce for another 5 minutes stirring constantly.

  5. Turn off the heat and add the remaining ingredients (sesame oil, sesame seeds, honey).

  6. Serve the rice with the vegetables and the sauce and enjoy.
