Buldakbokkeum Myeon are some of the most popular Korean instant noodles and very spicy, even for people that sometimes eat spicy food. I love those noodles and eat at least one packet a week.

Instant noodles are as the name already reveals instant food. Consuming them on a daily basis isn’t a healthy option but they have less fat than pizzas etc. They are ideal as a snack in between. As long as you don’t consume too many instant products, you don’t have to worry about anything. Adding additional products, such as vegetables, cheese, meat or spices give the noodles more flavour. I definitely recommend adding additional ingredients for a better result. The manufacturer Samyang even put a double as spicy instant noodle version on the market that translates as “nuclear” (Haek – Buldakbokkeum Myeon). It’s got an Scoville amount of 8,706 SHU. Apart from that the following other flavours are available:

  • Cool Buldak Bokkeum Myeon (쿨 불닭볶음면)
  • Buldak Bokkeum Tang Myeon (불닭볶음탕면) (Noodle Soup)

My recommendation

Try those noodles first and see if you can handle them. Someone who isn’t used to spicy food, will find them extremely hot. By adding other ingredients, the flavour will turn out a bit milder. In case you have some Dollars lying around, go into the next shop and buy those noodles. Alternatively you can buy a pack of 5 on Amazon.

Preparation

  1. Prepare the noodles as per cooking instruction. The noodles still have to be fried a little bit. Drain the water but leave about 2 tablespoons of the water in the pot. Put the pot back onto the stove and add the prepared noodles back into it. Now add the cut spring onions, the sauce and the flakes and stir fry everything.

  2. Cut the pork belly into small pieces and fry it.

  3. Prepare the fried egg. The egg yolk should be a bit runny (it tastes better that way).

  4. Mix the pork belly with the noodles and your meal is ready.

  5. Rather put a glass of milk next to you. It can get very hot.
