The photo shows the street entrance of Mr. Nam 68, a Vietnamese restaurant in Essen, at night. A wide illuminated sign in orange and bamboo-print stretches across the top, with the name in rounded letters next to a pink lotus flower and a bowl with chopsticks, and the tagline "Traditionelle Vietnamesische Küche" underneath. Beer brand ads for Veltins and Erdinger Weissbräu sit at either end of the sign. Below it, glass double doors open into a warmly lit dining room. Through the windows you can see menu boards hanging above the counter, a chalkboard menu by the door, tables and chairs, and walls painted lime green on one side and dark red on the other. A person in a dark jacket stands just inside the entrance and another guest in a red jacket is further back in the room.

TL;DR

Quality & Authenticity: Reviewers agree that this Vietnamese spot delivers generous portions of flavorful, authentic dishes—from hearty pho with rich, warming broth to tender Bun Bo Hue and vibrant Mì Quảng—at remarkably reasonable prices. Many highlight the precise balance of spices, the tenderness of the meat and the comforting, homemade taste that keeps customers returning, often ordering set menus or “doggy boxes” for leftovers. Service & Atmosphere: Despite its compact size, the restaurant earns praise for its warm, attentive service and casual, welcoming vibe. Guests note the friendly, family-run feel—sometimes even greeted by a smiling “grandma” behind the counter—and appreciate the quick turnaround time, outdoor seating on mild days and the convenience of being situated near a major mall. Tips & Caveats: It’s cash only, so come prepared with cash in hand. The small dining area can fill up quickly, especially on weekends or Friday evenings, so arriving early or on weekdays helps secure a table. While most dishes earn high marks, a few reviews caution against the cheaper curry options and suggest sticking to the signature pho and noodles for the best experience.

Table des matières :

    pho-bo

A wide white bowl of Pho Bo, Vietnamese beef noodle soup, fills the left side of the frame. The clear amber broth holds flat rice noodles, slices of beef, slivered red onion, chopped scallions, and torn green herbs floating on top. Beside it sits a smaller pale green plate with the fresh garnishes: a pile of raw bean sprouts, large leaves of Thai basil, sliced red chilies, and a wedge of lemon to squeeze into the soup. The dark table and simple plates suggest a casual restaurant meal, served at Mr. Nam 68, a Vietnamese restaurant in Essen.

A large black bowl filled with Bun Bo Nam Bo, the Vietnamese beef noodle salad, sits on a dark wooden table. The dish is built over a mound of thin white rice vermicelli, topped with warm slices of beef, a generous scatter of crispy fried shallots and crushed peanuts, and fresh greens like lettuce, cucumber, and herbs tucked underneath. Next to the bowl is a small white dish of nuoc cham, the sweet and tangy dipping sauce, its amber color flecked with a few bits of chili and garlic. The photo is taken from above, so the layered composition of the dish is easy to read: pale noodles on one side, the browned, garnish-heavy beef portion dominating the center.
