    Summary

RyuKoch Tours offers personalized, intimate experiences in Japan that go beyond the usual guidebook highlights. Created by Ryusei, a half-Japanese, half-German who has lived in Japan since 2020, the blog started to share the neighborhoods locals live in, the restaurants without English menus, and craft traditions that rarely make it into guidebooks; and now it offers tours shaped by your interests. There are no fixed itineraries—each day depends on what you care about, the weather, the season, and discoveries along the way. Small groups keep things tight, usually 2–4 people, enabling real conversations and access to places that rarely accommodate large crowds. Ryusei emphasizes a local perspective rather than a polished performance, admitting what he knows and doesn't, and introducing you to experts who know more. He’s upfront about expectations; if a place is crowded or overhyped, he’ll say so and, if needed, adjust plans entirely. Tours run in Tokyo, exploring neighborhoods locals spend weekends, hidden shopping streets, craft districts, and food spots you won’t find in English results; and in Saitama, with traditional papermaking villages, quiet mountain trails, and family-run sake breweries. The tours are for you if you want something different from the main sights, you prefer depth over breadth, you’re comfortable with spontaneity and being a bit lost, and you enjoy walking; they may not be for you if you want a minute-by-minute schedule, a fast-paced overview, or a crowded, standard itinerary.

Most tours in Japan follow a script. Bus to temple, photo, bus to shrine, photo, bus to lunch spot that seats 200 people. You see the highlights. You check the boxes. You leave without really understanding anything.

    My tours are different.

I'm Ryusei—half Japanese, half German, living in Japan since 2020. I started this blog to share the Japan I know: the neighborhoods where locals actually live, the restaurants without English menus, the craft traditions that don't make it into guidebooks. Eventually, people started asking if I could show them around in person.

    So now I do.

    What Makes These Tours Different

No fixed itineraries. Every tour is shaped by your interests, the weather, the season, and what we discover along the way. I'll suggest options, but you decide what sounds good. Some days we might spend three hours at a single craft workshop. Other days we might wander through five different neighborhoods. No two tours are ever the same.

Small groups only. Most tours are limited to 2–4 people. This isn't a business optimization—it's the only way to have real conversations, adjust on the fly, and access places that don't accommodate large groups.

Local perspective, not tour guide performance. I'm not a licensed guide reciting memorized facts. I'm someone who lives here, sharing places I genuinely love. I'll tell you what I know, admit what I don't, and introduce you to people who know more than I do.

Honest about what to expect. I won't oversell. If a place is crowded, I'll tell you. If something is overhyped, I'll say so. If you'd be happier somewhere else, I'll suggest it—even if it means changing our plans entirely.

    Tour Regions

I offer tours in the areas I know best—places where I've spent time, built relationships, and discovered things worth sharing.

    Tokyo

Beyond Shibuya Crossing and Senso-ji. The neighborhoods where Tokyoites actually spend their weekends. Local shopping streets, hidden cafes, craft districts, and food spots that don't appear in English search results.

    Saitama

Tokyo's overlooked neighbor. Traditional papermaking villages, mountain trails with nobody on them, sake breweries that have been family-run for generations. Day trips that feel like stepping back in time.

    Who These Tours Are For

This might be for you if... This probably isn't for you if...
You've already done the main sights and want something different This is your first time and you want to see the highlights
You prefer depth over breadth You want to cover as much ground as possible
You're comfortable with spontaneity and flexible plans You need a detailed minute-by-minute schedule
You enjoy walking and don't mind getting a bit lost You prefer air-conditioned transport between stops
You're curious about how locals actually live You're primarily interested in famous landmarks

Not sure if this is right for you? Feel free to reach out. I'd rather point you toward something that fits than have you book something that doesn't.

    How It Works

    1. Get in touch. Tell me when you're visiting, what interests you, and what kind of experience you're looking for. Don't worry about being specific—vague is fine. "I like food and quiet places" is enough to start.
    2. We'll talk. I'll ask some questions, suggest some options, and we'll figure out what makes sense together. No pressure to decide immediately.
    3. Book when you're ready. Once we've agreed on a date and general direction, I'll send you the details. Payment is handled before the tour.
    4. Meet up and explore. We'll start from a convenient meeting point and let the day unfold. I'll have suggestions ready, but we'll adjust based on how things feel.

A Note on What This Isn't

I'm not a licensed tour guide or a travel agency. I don't sell packages, arrange hotels, or provide transportation. What I offer is my time, my local knowledge, and my company as we explore together. Think of it less like hiring a guide and more like spending the day with someone who knows the area and genuinely enjoys showing it to others.

If you're looking for a traditional guided tour with a set itinerary and historical commentary, there are great options for that—I'm happy to point you toward them. But if you want something more personal, more flexible, and more real, let's talk.
