A Shibuya icon since 1968
Opened in April 1968, Seibu Shibuya attracted customers with luxury-brand shops while helping to promote cutting-edge fashion. Over nearly six decades, it became a driving force in shaping youth culture and was seen as one of Japan's major fashion centers.
On its final day of business, the store's windows were covered with messages from customers expressing gratitude as well as sadness over the closure.
From record sales to steady decline
Annual sales at the store peaked in fiscal 1990 at 96.7 billion yen, or about 616 million dollars in today's terms. However, sales had fallen to less than half that figure last fiscal year, due to factors such as the growth of online shopping.

- Peak annual sales: 96.7 billion yen in fiscal 1990, about $616 million in today's dollars

Failed negotiations over the property
Behind the closure was a dispute over the site. In August last year, the owners of the land and buildings asked Seibu to vacate the property. The two sides held negotiations but failed to reach an agreement.
A designer who witnessed it all
Designer Kikuchi Takeo, aged 87, the creative force behind brands such as TAKEO KIKUCHI, observed the store's history from the very beginning. Reflecting on the closure, he said: "I think we're entering another era that calls for fresh ideas and new proposals."
The end of a chapter for Shibuya
The closure brings down the curtain on 58 years in which Seibu Shibuya stood as a symbol of the district and a hub for new trends, marking a notable turning point for one of Japan's major fashion centers.
