Our Road Trip from Tokyo to Kyoto

Today, we set off on our drive from Tokyo to Kyoto. While the journey took a total of nine hours, it was still pleasant as my mother and I alternated driving.

The highways in Japan are very well-developed and well-signposted. There are also plenty of rest stops along the way, where we could freshen up.

During the drive, we could also enjoy the beautiful scenery. Along the highway, there were lush valleys, lakes, and mountains that crossed our path. This made the ride very relaxing and varied.

However, I have to say that it's a bit of a shame that driving is still cheaper than taking the train, especially in light of climate change. Compared to driving, the train is almost twice to three times as expensive, which means that many people still prefer the car, even though there is a more environmentally friendly alternative.

On the other hand, I must also say that I appreciate the comfort of the car. We could rest at any time, stop whenever we needed a break, and always had our own belongings with us. You can't necessarily say the same about a train ride.

A Stopover in Hamamatsu: Relaxation by Lake Hamana

If you're on your way from Tokyo to Kyoto, it's worth stopping in Hamamatsu. We particularly enjoyed visiting the beautiful Lake Hamana - a place of peace and relaxation.

What's especially interesting about the lake is the fact that it has both freshwater and saltwater. This is why eels are also farmed there, making it very popular with fish lovers.

After a walk along the lakeshore, we went to the nearby Shibuki restaurant. The restaurant even offers English menus, which makes ordering easier. My mother and brother tried the famous grilled eel, while I opted for the dish with Shirasu (small fish).

So, if you're looking for a place to relax and unwind, I highly recommend a stopover in Hamamatsu and at Lake Hamana. Here you can not only enjoy nature, but also discover the local cuisine and culture.
