The Blue Sea of Flowers
The park is famous for its stunning tulip blossoms in spring, but even in summer and autumn you can enjoy a variety of flowers and greenery. Particularly impressive are the countless blue Nemophila flowers (Baby Blue Eyes), which transform a large area of the park into a unique sea of blossoms. A breathtaking backdrop for any visitor.

Summer Cypress in Autumn
I had the chance to visit Hitachi Seaside Park once again—this time in autumn. The park actually offers a unique display of different plants and flowers blossoming at various times of the year.
In autumn, the main attractions are the Kochia bushes, also called summer cypress, which turn a brilliant shade of red. The season for this is mid to late October. During these periods, the park can get quite crowded, especially on weekends.

Experience a colorful day trip outside Tokyo: Admire the radiant Kochia bushes in Hitachi Seaside Park, enjoy seasonal fruit picking (e.g. grapes, pears or chestnuts), and treat yourself to an Italian buffet.
A relaxing mix of nature, indulgence, and rural flair—perfect for a short autumn getaway!

Activities and Attractions in the Park
In addition to the floral displays, there are plenty of activities and attractions to discover in the park. How about a bike ride along the sea of flowers or a ride on the Ferris wheel, from which you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the park and the surrounding landscape?
If you prefer to take it easy, you can relax on one of the many benches in the park and just enjoy nature, have a nice picnic with a picnic blanket (maybe even a homemade Bento?), or relax at one of the many street food stalls (only during the season) or cafés.
Tip: Plan Your Visit & Prepare
To make sure your visit to Hitachi Seaside Park is an unforgettable experience, you should plan your trip early and prepare well. The park can get very crowded, especially during flower season, so it's best to arrive early in the morning or visit on a weekday.
Once I was there in winter, when the park was almost empty, though there were very few flowers. In peak season, meaning spring, there are hundreds or even thousands of visitors, but so far I've never seen a long queue at the entrance.
Definitely bring a camera with you to capture the stunning flower displays. And don't forget sunscreen and a hat, as the sun in Japan in spring and summer can be very strong.
Overall, Hitachi Seaside Park is an absolute highlight and a must for every Japan traveler. The combination of stunning flowers and numerous activities and attractions makes this park truly unforgettable. So, let's go to Ibaraki-ken!
Getting There by Train
The travel time from Tokyo is about 2 to 2.5 hours depending on your starting point. With the Japan Rail Pass you can take the JR Joban line to Katsuta Station. From there, buses go to the park (about 15-20 minutes). I recommend setting aside a whole day for the excursion so that you have enough time to enjoy the beautiful park and get familiar with train travel in Japan.

Getting There by Car
The drive from Tokyo takes about 2 to 3 hours depending on traffic. If you're considering driving in Japan or using a rental car, you can park directly at the park. Parking fees are ¥520 for standard cars, ¥260 for motorcycles and ¥1,580 for larger vehicles [4].

A Small Downside
The park is relatively far from Tokyo, but for nature lovers it's still worth a visit, especially as there are also many beaches nearby.
